I am interested in what paint can do, and in the process of discovery that painting allows.
In my Seascape and Landscape Horizon works I collaborate with serendipitous marks to create images of the landscape that engage our imagination and memory. Paint marks are created by pulling paint across the smooth sanded canvas surface with a plastic wedge. I build up many layers and periodically sand the surface to keep it as smooth as possible.Finely ground pumice is added to the paint layers and to transparent layers to create a deceptively smooth surface that appears highly textured.
Another ongoing project is my Tablet series where I create contemporary relics using calligraphic lines, graphite, hard edged paint lines and scraping and sanding to excavate new forms.
The forms evoke images of maps, plans, and schematics.
I speak briefly on Tables in a segment of MN Original.
